  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 5 sandwiches

Ingredients

– 1.5 pounds ground chuck (80/20 blend)

– Salt and black pepper (to taste)

– 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

– 2 tablespoons butter

– 1 tablespoon oil

– Salt and black pepper (to taste)

– Splash of water (if needed)

– 1/2 cup mayonnaise

– 1/4 cup ketchup

– 2 tablespoons pickle relish or diced dill pickles

– 1 heaping tablespoon yellow mustard

– 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

– 1 teaspoon garlic powder

– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

– Salt (to taste)

– 10 slices sourdough or rye bread

– 10 large slices Monterey Jack or Swiss cheese

– 5 tablespoons softened butter for buttering bread

– 1 tablespoon oil for cooking patties

Instructions

1-Gather all ingredients and prepare mise en place, including slicing onions thinly and portioning ground beef into equal patties for efficiency and consistent cooking.

2-Caramelize the onions over medium heat with a pinch of salt until golden and sweet, about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3-Shape the ground beef into patties slightly larger than the bread slices and season with salt and pepper.

4-Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side or until desired doneness. For vegan or alternative proteins, follow package cooking instructions.

5-Butter one side of each bread slice, place bread butter-side-down on the skillet, add a slice of cheese, a cooked patty, a generous layer of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese, then top with the second bread slice butter-side-up.

6-Grill the sandwich on medium heat for about 3-5 minutes per side, pressing slightly until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.

7-Remove from skillet, let rest for a minute, then slice in half and serve warm while optionally customizing with extras.

8-Prepare Burger Sauce by whisking together all sauce ingredients in a bowl and set aside; Caramelize Onions by heating a cast iron skillet, adding butter and oil, then cooking onions with seasoning for 20-25 minutes; Shape Patties by dividing ground chuck into 5 equal portions and seasoning them; Cook Patties on a greased griddle for 3-4 minutes per side; Assemble and Cook Sandwiches by layering ingredients in the pan and grilling until golden; finally, Serve immediately with extra sauce if desired.
