Instructions

1-Step 1: Making the Pizza Dough: First, dissolve 1 tbsp active dry yeast in 3/4 cup warm water and let it sit for about 7 minutes until it’s activated make sure the water isn’t too hot. Then, whisk in 1/2 tbsp honey and 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil to create a bubbly mixture. Next, add 2 cups plus 2 tbsp all-purpose flour and 3/4 tsp salt, then knead until the dough is sticky and well combined, either by hand or with a mixer on low speed.

Once mixed, cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size, taking about 45 minutes to 1 hour at room temperature or 25-30 minutes in a 100˚F oven. This rising step is key for that perfect, fluffy crust. If you want to learn more about variations, check out our pesto pasta recipe for ideas on pasta-based dishes that complement pizza nights.

2-Step 2: Preparing the Sauce: While the dough rises, combine 1 1/2 cup marinara sauce, 1 minced garlic clove, and 1/4 tsp oregano in a small saucepan if you’re using it. Simmer on medium-low heat until the sauce thickens by about one-third, which helps keep your pizza from getting too soggy. Let it cool to room temperature before you use it, and you can speed this up with an ice water bath if needed.

3-Step 3: Assembling and Baking: Sprinkle your baking pans with 1/4 cup cornmeal to avoid sticking and get a crispier crust, or oil them lightly as an alternative. Oil your work surface and hands, then divide the risen dough into three pieces and shape each into an 8-inch round. Spread one-third of the sauce on each, leaving a half-inch border, and add grated mozzarella cheese along with your chosen toppings.

For Greek-style pizzas, drizzle on some extra virgin olive oil before baking, and sprinkle feta cheese on top after. Bake at 415 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes until everything is golden and bubbly. The total preparation time is around 1 hour and 15 minutes, including rising and sauce prep, with cooking taking about 15 minutes, making it ideal for quick family meals.
