Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup flour, dark corn syrup, vanilla extract, beaten egg, and water.
3. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just begins to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
4. For the crumb topping, mix 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, cream of tartar, baking soda, salt, and softened butter in a bowl. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
5. Pour the cooled filling into the prepared pie shell.
6. Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the filling.
7. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is set.
8. Allow the pie to cool before serving. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
