Ingredients

– 1/4 cup warm water

– 2-1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (or 1 packet)

– 1 cup milk

– 1/4 cup butter

– 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

– 1/4 cup sugar

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 1 egg

– 2 inches deep canola oil (for frying)

– 1 cup milk (for Boston Cream Filling)

– 1/2 cup sugar (for Boston Cream Filling)

– 1/4 cup corn starch (for Boston Cream Filling)

– 2 egg yolks (for Boston Cream Filling)

– 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste (for Boston Cream Filling)

– 1/4 teaspoon salt (for Boston Cream Filling)

– 1 cup heavy whipping cream (for Boston Cream Filling)

– 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips (for Chocolate Glaze)

– 3 tablespoons butter (for Chocolate Glaze)

– 1 cup confectioner’s sugar (for Chocolate Glaze)

– 4 tablespoons hot water (for Chocolate Glaze)

– soft caramels as needed (for Caramel Ridges, specifically for shell ridges)

– black food color as needed (for Caramel Ridges, for painting details)

Instructions

1-First, mix the warm water with active dry yeast and let it sit until it bubbles, about 5 minutes.

2-In a large bowl, combine the milk, butter, flour, sugar, salt, and egg to form the dough, then knead until smooth.

3-Let the dough rise in a warm spot for about an hour, covered with plastic wrap.

4-Once risen, roll out the dough and cut into donut shapes using your oval cookie cutter.

5-Heat the canola oil in a large pot to 350°F, as measured by your thermometer.

6-Carefully fry the donuts for 2-3 minutes per side until golden, then drain on paper towels.

7-For the filling, whisk together milk, sugar, corn starch, egg yolks, vanilla bean paste, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat until thickened.

8-Stir in heavy whipping cream and cool before piping into the cooled donuts using your piping bag.

9-Top with chocolate glaze made from melting milk chocolate chips, butter, confectioner’s sugar, and hot water together.

10-Finish with caramel ridges by melting soft caramels and brushing on with a food color paintbrush mixed with black food color for that cockroach effect.

11-Use bamboo skewers to hold and decorate.

12-This method brings out the best in your Fried Cockroach Donut, making it a hit for any gathering.
