Ingredients
– 1 loaf Cuban bread
– Ham
– Roasted pork
– Swiss cheese
– Pickles
– Mustard
– Butter or olive oil, as needed
Instructions
1-First Step: Prepare the bread Slice the Cuban bread into 8 to 12 inch lengths. This size gives enough room for layering while keeping the sandwich manageable for pressing and slicing. If the loaf is very soft, let it rest briefly so it is easier to cut cleanly.
2-Second Step: Add fat to the outside Lightly butter the outside of the bread or brush it with olive oil. This helps the crust brown during pressing and gives the sandwich a crisp finish. Keep the coating thin so the bread does not become greasy.
3-Third Step: Spread the mustard Spread mustard on the inside of the bread. This is an important part of a traditional Cuban sandwich recipe because the mustard adds brightness and balances the richness of the pork, ham, and cheese. Use enough to cover the surface, but not so much that it overpowers the filling.
4-Fourth Step: Layer the fillings Add the ham first, followed by the roasted pork, then the Swiss cheese, and finally the pickles. This order helps the cheese melt around the meats and keeps the pickles from sliding out too easily. Keep the layers even from end to end so every bite has balanced flavor.
5-Fifth Step: Close and press the sandwich Close the sandwich carefully and place it in a sandwich press. Press until the bread is crispy and the cheese melts. A sandwich press gives the most even result, but a heavy skillet or grill press can also work. The bread should flatten slightly, and the filling should become warm all the way through. If you want the classic Cuban pork sandwich texture, press firmly enough to crisp the bread, but not so hard that the filling bursts out.
6-Sixth Step: Check for doneness Look for golden bread and fully melted cheese. The sandwich should feel warm and compact. If the crust is browning too quickly, lower the heat and continue pressing for a little longer so the center can heat through.
7-Final Step: Slice and serve Cut the sandwich diagonally before serving. This makes the layers easier to see and gives each half a clean edge. Serve the sandwich while hot, since the crispy exterior and melted cheese are at their best right away.
