  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: About 24 pieces

Ingredients

– About 35 saltine crackers (approximately one sleeve; substitutes include graham crackers, Club crackers, or Ritz crackers)

– 1 cup unsalted butter (remember to omit added salt if you’re using salted butter)

– 1 cup packed brown sugar

– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

– ½ teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt (omit this if using salted butter)

– 2 cups chocolate chips (you can choose milk chocolate, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate)

– Optional toppings: nuts like pecans, almonds, walnuts, peanuts, or pistachios; mini Reese’s cups; crushed Oreos; pretzels; toasted coconut; sea salt; toffee bits; sprinkles; broken candy canes; peppermint baking chips

Instructions

1-First, preheat the oven to 350°F and line a jelly roll pan with nonstick foil or parchment paper.

2-Next, arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the pan.

3-In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, melt 1 cup unsalted butter and 1 cup packed brown sugar over medium-high heat, stirring frequently until it boils.

4-Once boiling, let the mixture boil for 3 minutes while stirring almost continuously.

5-Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and ½ teaspoon sea salt or kosher salt.

6-Pour the caramel evenly over the crackers and bake for 5 minutes until it’s bubbling.

7-After baking, remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle 2 cups chocolate chips evenly on top.

8-Cover with foil and let it stand for 5 minutes to melt the chocolate.

9-Then, remove the foil, gently spread the melted chocolate with an offset spatula, add your desired toppings, and cool completely or chill for at least 2 hours.

10-Finally, peel the foil from the bottom and break or cut into pieces.
